Thanksgiving Drain Cleaning Tips

Plumbers and plumbing companies across the land have a name for the day after Thanksgiving: Black Friday. But not because we spend the day shopping. For us, it’s the busiest day of the year for clogged drains and toilets.

If you have a problem, Plumbtastic will be there for you, too. But doesn’t it make more sense to work on drain clog prevention before and during the Thanksgiving feast? Of course it does, and we’re here to show you how.

Fat and Oil Sink Clogs

The Problem: There’s a reason why Thanksgiving dinner is so delicious – many of the foods are cooked with fat and oil! No problem – until it all gets washed down the drain. When that happens, the gooey stuff can eventually solidify and gum up the works inside your pipes. What a mess!

How to Avoid It: Pour leftover oils and fats into a container and place it in the trash. For even better results, wipe down your greasy pans before rinsing them off in the sink.

Garbage Disposal Clogs

The Problem: Garbage disposals are the unsung heroes of Thanksgiving dinner. Unfortunately, they’re not built to accommodate certain foods. Disposals can get clogged by foods like onion peels, celery, pasta, and potatoes (and their peels!). Bones can also cause serious problems – so find somewhere else to dispose of that wishbone!

How to Avoid It: First, scrape excess food into the trash. Before you put anything in the disposal, turn on the cold water – it helps your disposal perform at its best. Ultimately, garbage disposals should be used for the bare minimum of food scraps left on your plate – anything else is a potential clog waiting to happen.

The Dreaded Toilet Clog

The Problem: With family members visiting, your bathroom is going to get more use. If family members are flushing the wrong things down the toilet, it can lead to a clog too tough for a plunger to vanquish.

How to Avoid It: Toilets are not designed to flush Kleenex, napkins, or pumpkin pie. Only flush toilet paper to avoid clogs! Also, if you have an older house or previous clogged toilet or sink drain problems, you may want to have drain lines cleared before the holiday arrives.

Still, even the best prevention efforts may not be enough. So, if you fall victim to a seriously clogged drain or toilet on Black Friday or any other time, contact the plumbing professionals at Plumbtastic. We’ll get the job done to your complete satisfaction…guaranteed!
