How to Simplify Spring Cleaning

What is it about spring that makes house cleaning such a big deal? Just playing “devil’s advocate”, but doesn’t winter cleaning make more sense so that by the time spring comes long all the heavy cleaning is done?

Well, be that as it may, spring cleaning remains the big deal that it always has been and, if you’re so inclined to follow that tradition, the least we can do is provide a few timely tips on how to make it a less odious endeavor.

Start with a plan. What is it you really want to accomplish vs. your everyday or weekly cleaning? De-clutter, for example, better organize, deep clean the nooks and crannies that often get ignored? Decide what you’d like to accomplish, and then come up with the most logical way to go about it.

Gather your supplies. Whether you’re scrubbing the floors, washing windows, replacing worn weather stripping, etc., you’ll work more efficiently if you have everything you need in advance.

Schedule your time. Spring cleaning or not, life goes on as normal. So, unless you plan your cleaning time, it’s likely it won’t get done, or at least in the organized, timely manner you would prefer.  Whether you have only an hour each day or much bigger blocks of time available to you, make it official and enter on a calendar you actually refer to.

In the mood. Do you work better with music blaring or in complete silence? Prefer classical or pop? Will having your kids home help or distract you? All work and no play make Jack a dull boy…or something like that.

Tackle one room or project at a time. Trying to do everything at once can prove to be exhausting while leaving you feel like you’re getting nowhere. Instead, divide the entire workload into manageable bites so you can check items off your list more rapidly for a greater sense of accomplishment.

Once the spring cleaning is done, you’re bound to step back and admire your own dedication and thoroughness. But in doing so, what if your eye also takes in dated or shabby kitchen or bathroom fixtures?  A sink that’s draining a little slow?  Or an outdoor faucet that sprung a leak over the winter?
