If you’ve noticed some unattractive spots growing on your bathroom ceiling, you have a problem that is more than aesthetic in nature. The sooner you take steps to remove and prevent the spread of mold, the better.
Mold grows and spreads very quickly and can be destructive to your home, not to mention harmful to your health. Mold, for example, can cause severe allergy problems that could eventually lead to asthma.
Still, the first step in getting rid of a mold problem is to figure out how it got on your bathroom ceiling in the first place. Here are the two most likely causes:
- Mold loves moisture and warmth. If your bathroom is not well ventilated, each time you shower excess moisture is created with essentially nowhere to go. Does your bathroom have an exhaust fan? Is it working properly?
- Is there an attic space above the bathroom? If so, that’s where the mold might have originated and is now spreading downward and probably outward, too. A small leak in the roof over your bathroom could be the cause, and so can a loose connection in your ceiling fan wiring.
Once you’ve found and corrected the source of the unwanted moisture, you can treat the mold without fear of it returning. First, dab the moldy spots with a bleach-and-water solution. You can put the mixture in a spray bottle or use a sponge to apply it. Just be sure to that you don’t oversaturate the problem areas.
After treating the spots, it’s a good idea to repaint the ceiling to prevent future growth from the same root cause, even if you’ve taken steps to correct it. Start with a primer that has anti-mold properties, then paint over the primer with specially-formulated bath paint. The result will be an effective and long-lasting barrier against further outbreaks. .
